Hello…(sang in my best Adele voice.) Yep, I went there! :p
Welcome to Tish’s Two-Cents. In this column I’ll be sharing tidbits, thoughts, quotes, interviews, reviews, and just about anything else book related that tickles my fancy! You’ll get a peek inside my ever-turning mind, and hopefully come to appreciate my slightly-off sense of humor. More importantly, though, I’ll be sharing my business know-how. Okay, okay…stop laughing! :p Believe it or not, for years behind the scenes through FB chats, emails, and phone calls, I’ve helped multiple Indie and Hybrid authors find their footing in this ever-changing world. As many can attest, I’m always willing to share my knowledge and offer a helping hand if I can. <3
For my first article with Gliterary Girl, though, I wanted to start out with something fun. So, today we’ll be taking a fantastical look at Traditional vs Self-Publishing. Let our adventure begin…
In this wide, wide world of publishing today, there are many options when it comes to publishing your book. But which is the right choice: follow the yellow brick road, or wander down the rabbit hole? When it comes to your baby, where do you go when you simply don’t know?
The yellow brick road, or the traditional route, could possibly lead you to OZ, aka: Barnes & Noble, Target, or Wal-Mart. This route could be a grand adventure, starting off with a whirlwind of excitement which leads you to an unknown land filled with lots of “green” and sparkly things. However, don’t forget about those flying monkeys or a wicked witch you may have to face along the way such as contract snags, smaller royalty payouts, and at times, lack-luster marketing.
The rabbit hole, or the self-publishing route, however, can also lead you to a fantastical place where you can discover the magic all on your own. This can be extremely rewarding mentally and monetarily, but you can be sure your journey won’t be without a few mad hatters or crazy cats crossing your path. The rabbit hole is a place you can easily get lost, and if you take a wrong turn, it just might be your end. And don’t get me started on that damn white rabbit. You know, the one you chase until you question whether or not it’s just a figment of your imagination, aka: the agent! 😉
So which road is right for you?
Why not take a page from my friend Elizabeth Montgomery’s new book, Twisted, and blend the two: OZ and Wonderland = the Hybrid author. Each path on this intrepid journey has its ups and downs, but combining the two––if you’re lucky enough to do so, will let you sample the magic of both worlds.
When it comes to getting your baby out there, there’s never a wrong choice. Just be sure you know which monsters you’re up against and arm yourself well. In other words…do your research! Only then can you choose the best fit for you!
